Brits truly love marmite, a yeast-based spread with a truly intense, bitter flavor that is definitely an acquired taste. Australians, on the other hand, prefer their own, slightly less intense version of it, vegemite.

In some way, this fermented spread is almost like a long-lost, quirky cousin of beer, so it is not surprising that some Australians found a way to turn this popular spread into a home-made alcoholic beverage similar to American “moonshine”.

The results? Surprising to say the least. The drink appears to be quite tasty, slightly echoing the flavor of strong ginger beer

Brewed with a combination of vegemite, added yeast and sugar, this drink seems to be quite easy to make and relatively affordable! Vegemite, which is made using leftover yeast from breweries, has also been banned from Australian prisons to prevent inmates from brewing their own alcohol.
